Superintendent's Newsletter October 2023

As we approach the end of the first quarter of school, it is amazing to me how much has been accomplished -
3,777 students were registered and scheduled into classes
Almost all positions are filled with qualified personnel (we still need paraeducators at all levels, cafeteria workers, Algebra and Special Education teachers)
Water polo, Volleyball, Tennis, Golf, Cross County and Football teams are all practicing competing
A new sport at AHS - Girl's Flag Football is up and running and a success!
Back to school nights for all sites were held and well attended
The MEF/MRC Run for Education was held and raised $101,000 for teacher/school grants
And elementary conference week is going strong.

The start of the year has not been without challenges, with a large oak tree falling (thankfully at night) displacing 4 John Swett Classrooms and it's 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade occupants for 2 days, an intruder incident on the Alhambra High School Campus causing a frightening hour long lockdown for students and staff,  textbook orders not received and of course a new round of COVID causing many absences of staff and students, but in true MUSD form, the challenges have been met head on, and it is back to business as usual.

Homecoming is upon us with the festivities beginning on Thursday evening with the Rally at 7:00PM in the Gym.  (Doors will open at 6:30PM)  Keeping with tradition, the Homecoming Parade will begin at 3:00PM on Friday, followed by the JV Game at 5:00PM and the Varsity at 7:30pm. The Homecoming Dance will be on Saturday at 8:00pm in the Gym.  For safety and supervision reasons, the AHS has mandated that all students TK-8 be accompanied by a parent or guardian to the home games.  What this means is that the students are to remain in sight of their parents during the game, except when they travel to the doggie diner for refreshments or to the restrooms, and back to the stands.  Please speak with your children about being respectful to the admin and adults who are supervising.  Students unable to do so will be asked to leave the game.  Let's all help to make this a fun family event!  Go Dogs!

It is the District's intention that every student has a successful school year and I want to take a minute to remind everyone that we are here to help. Should an issue arise with your child in terms of the classroom, please be sure to contact your child's teacher as the first step in resolution. Site administration is accessible, both by phone and email, and welcome your communication.

This month I would like to take a minute and introduce the MUSD Superintendent's Administrative Cabinet team. Each one serves a different department and is accessible to the MUSD community by phone, email or in person meeting, although if you have a concern, you should always go to the teacher or site administration first.

Parcel Tax Renewal

Supporting a Well-Rounded Education
In 2018, Martinez voters approved Measure Q with over 76% of the vote. For the last 5 years,
Measure Q has supplemented State funding in order to provide local students with a well-
rounded education. This funding is set to expire and the District is looking at all options to
renew it.

Protecting High-Quality Education in Martinez Schools
The State of California only provides enough money for a basic education. For nearly 15 years, Martinez students have relied upon locally controlled parcel tax funding to protect and improve the quality of our schools. This funding helps Martinez retain quality teachers and counselors, protect art and music programs, and support academic programs in science, technology, and engineering that enable students to compete for the best colleges and careers. However, this funding is set to expire and the District is looking at all options to renew it.

Renewing Funding for Martinez Schools – Without Increasing Taxes
Thanks to highly qualified teachers and challenging academic programs, MUSD provides a well-
rounded education to nearly 4,000 students across 7 school sites. Our MUSD schools help keep
our community and property values strong. However, local funding that has supported our
schools for 15 years is set to expire. If locally controlled funding expires, our schools will lose
$850,000 per year. This loss of funds may trigger cuts to teachers, staff, and programs. To learn
more, please visit www.MartinezUSD.net/ParcelTaxInfo.
